Who doesn’t love a good hearty spud? With the majority of our patch already booked out for the next couple of seasons our options were limited with the idea of growing our own potatoes. Two books CĂ©line had bought me for my birthday back in April when the patch was first being established were Fabian Capomolla and Mat Pember of The Little Veggie Patch Co’s; ‘How to grow food in small spaces’ and ‘Guide to backyard farming’. These two books have been our bibles on this journey and without them nearby I must admit we would not have been nearly as successful with our gardening endeavours.

In first of the two books published was a step by step DIY project on growing spuds vertically in a easy to build cheap and no fuss tower. This option suited us perfectly and was how we set about growing our first batch of potatoes. There are many varieties out there you can grow, we opted for the ‘Nicola’ variety again a suggested favourite with Fabian and Mat, and purchased our sprouting tubers locally and online from ‘Green Harvest’ in Maleny. With two towers now nearing harvesting we are now in great anticipation for our first homegrown swiss raclette party!
