Did you know the contents from the average aussie wheelie bin contains nearly 50% food waste? That food waste could be just as easily turned into highly fertile organic soil for use around the backyard and not in landfill where it rots without air to form harmful greenhouse gases.

On setting about to create our organic vegetable garden we decided ahead of time to begin two methods of composting to provide the much needed nutrient base for our raised bed, a standalone bay and a DIY worm farm.

A worm farm is a great and fun way to quickly turn your food scraps into castings (worm poo), a natural nutrient-rich organic fertiliser. The subsidiary liquid (worm wee), can also be diluted with water and applied directly to your veggie patch as liquid fertiliser. One worm farm can consume the kitchen waste created by a 2-3 person household and if maintained appropriately is completely odourless!

We built our own worm farm using a few Tuffman storage containers for durability (see photographs below) but they can be as easily created with a few old polystyrene boxes you or a friend may have lying around. Happy farming.
